Travel > Athens - Greece
I couldn't resist Athens for the 2004 Olympics. Its where the first Olympics were held so I just had to go. I have to admit that Athens was certainly larger than I had expected it to be (at least from a ruins perspective)...getting from one set of ruins to another appeared to be a trek - but it certainly was a trek that was rewarded especially when I got to the truly giant ruins like the Parthenon to the right were truly staggering -- how did people with so few tools build on such a scale on top of a mountain?
The Olympics were definitely fun, numerous games, and all sorts of activities. We wound up renting a place on a nearby island that was accessible every 15 minutes by hydrofoil. The island had a flavor all to its own -- we had the hustle and bustle of Athens with the slower laid back aspects of Greece all in one. Nothing like exploring greek islands in rented scooters, enjoying good food, and just kicking back. Definitely recommend that experience. |
